Updates Christmas tree-cutting tag program 2009
Weather advisory: Forest officials advise: "Know before you go. Due to recent snowstorms impacting northern Arizona, please check weather conditions for the day and location you plan to cut your tree. Some cutting areas may be inaccessible due to snow."
Tag availability update: Northern Arizona national forests' over-the-counter tree-cutting tag sales:
Prescott NF: There are no remaining tree-cutting tags available for over-the-counter sales.
Coconino NF: There are only about 100 tags available for the Red Rock Ranger District over-the-counter sales. A Coconino public affairs officer advises, "On the Coconino, we've essentially closed our cutting area on the Mogollon Rim due to snow."
The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests still have several hundred over-the-counter tags, forest-wide cutting area availability, to be sold through Dec. 24, but a forest public affairs officer advises, "Area 6 has anywhere from 8 inces to 24 inches on it, although there are plowed roads where people could walk/ski/snowshoe to get a tree. Folks are advised to look for pinyon pine which is usually obtainable near Springerville."
