Newly Formed ASU Women’s Sailing Squad Debuts In San Diego
The Arizona State University Sailing Club women’s team placed ninth in theJeff Simon Women’s Regatta in their first women’s competition. The regatta was hosted by the University of California, San Diego and the Mission Bay Yacht Club at the end of January. Skipper Sadie Hoberman with club president Ciara Harding as crew took home a third-place finish in one of the races.
One of Harding’s major goals as club president has been to have a women’s team. “Sailing is traditionally a male- dominated space,” said Harding.“Participating in the women’s races this weekend really highlights the work we’ve done as a team to create a space where anyone can skipper, crew, or be a part of leadership.”
There were eight races run over the course of two days in Mission Bay with each day being scored as separate women’s regattas.The team placed ninth on the first day and tenth on day two. Saturday and Sunday were sunny in the 60s starting with light air that built during the day to around 17 miles an hour.
There were 11 boats entered among eight colleges and universities. At the regatta, four sailors represented ASU with one boat entered. The skippers were sophomore Sadie Hoberman and senior Katherine Pearson with senior Ciara Harding, senior Sofiya Gaffke and sophomore Natalie Tricarico as crew.
The Jeff Simon Women’s Regatta was the club’s first intercollegiate competition the spring series in the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference. The next regatta is theMustang Women’s Regatta hosted by CalPoly, San Luis Obispoat the Morro Bay Yacht Club in Morro Bay, Calif. on March 5 and 6.
The mission of the ASU Sailing Club is to promote sailing and sailing education for people of all abilities within the greater ASU community and to develop personal leadership and team building skills through the sport of sailing.
