Winding Down 2022/ Winding Up For 2023
November 4: Young Hunters
Young hunters who want to learn all about waterfowl hunting are invited to attend the annual Pintail Slough Junior Waterfowl Camp, sponsored by the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) and Havasu National Wildlife Refuge.
The camp will take place Jan. 6-8 (hunters check in Jan. 6) at Havasu National Wildlife Refuge. The deadline to register is Nov. 4. The event is limited to 18 hunters between ages 12 and 17 (each must be accompanied by an adult). No prior experience is necessary.
All young hunters will learn how to identify, hunt and field-dress waterfowl before putting those skills to use in the Pintail Slough duck blinds.
“If you aren’t getting out, you’re missing out,” said Cody Johnston, wildlife manager supervisor. “This is a great opportunity for parents to get outside with their kids and enjoy the outdoors.”
To request an application, contact Jessica Stephens at jstephens@azgfd.gov, or call AZGFD’s regional office in Kingman at 928-692-7700. A refundable $40 registration fee is required. Participants will be chosen through a random draw and notified by e-mail or telephone.
November 10: 247TH Marine Corps Birthday Celebration
You Are Invited To The Ball That Honors 247 Years
By Tom Cole
Marine (Retired)
Special Features Writer
The ‘Corps – soldiers of the sea, green amphibious monsters who will attack from the foam of the oceans of the world any land mass of any people who threaten or attack the United States of America or her people; “First To Fight”.
The ‘Corps was “born”at Tun Tavern, Philadelphia on November 10, 1775, the only service started in a tavern. However, the birth of the ‘Corps was not formally celebrated until Marine General and Commandant John A. Lejeune declared in order 47 dated 1 November 1921 that, “In memory [of all marines who have served], it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our ‘Corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history”.
The tradition of celebrating the U.S.Marine Corps birthday has been carried on throughout the world “in every climb and place” by all U.S. Marines since that time. At the embassies throughout the world where the Marines stand guard, the Marine Birthday Ball is one of the most cherished celebrations of the year and ambassadors dare not miss it.
It is to that end that at 1800 (6 p.m.), Thursday, November 10, 2022 the Marines, members and guests of VFW Post 3513 in Scottsdale will be celebrating the 247th birthday of the United States Marine Corps and invite you to attend.
Reservations for the $10 dinner and seating are required; seating is limited. Tickets may be purchased at VFW Post 3513, 7220 E. Wilshire, Scottsdale, Ariz. Please contact Dorothy Callaway at 602-359-0642 for reservations and further information.

In Flanders Fields
BY JOHN MCCRAE
In Flanders fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw,
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow,
In Flanders fields.
