Maricopa County Arizona Parks Honor Veterans
(Maricopa County) – As a small token of appreciation for the freedoms afforded to all Americans, Maricopa County’s Parks and Recreation Department will be honoring all veterans with Military Service Appreciation Day on Wednesday, November 11, 2009.
In 2005, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors issued a formal proclamation resolving that each Veteran’s Day from that point forward would be observed as Military Service Appreciation Day at all Maricopa County Parks. All active and non-active military personnel are encouraged to visit any of the county’s ten parks and enjoy affordable recreation. The $6 entry fee per carload will be waived for military personnel.
“The parks are a good place for people to reconnect with their families. We’re hoping military personnel will take advantage of our offer, pack a picnic and come on out to the parks to enjoy the cooler temperatures with those who are near and dear to their hearts on this special day,” stated R.J. Cardin, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department Director.
At approximately 120,000 acres, Maricopa County is home to the largest regional park system in the United States. The parks are located throughout the county and are all within a 45-minute drive from downtown Phoenix. For information about activities at a county park near you, call (602) 506-2930 or visit www.maricopa.gov/parks.
Pleasant Paddlers Program - Full Moon Paddle Tour of Scorpion Bay
Lake Pleasant Regional Park
Come enjoy this repeat of last month's fun full moon paddle tour of Scorpion Bay at Lake Pleasant. This time it is on a Tuesday, for those who do not like the weekends. Look for the "Pleasant Paddlers" signs from the contact station to the gate of the marina. Someone will be at the first Scorpion Bay Marina gate to let you through from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM (no entry after 5:00 PM), and just follow the road down to the launch site. Bring your own kayak or canoe and a sense of adventure. Add to that a flashlight, some water, your PFD, and enjoy the evening. If you need a kayak, Scorpion Bay Marina has rental kayaks, call them at 928-501-7368 to reserve your kayak. We will be launching not too far from the rental area, so it will be easy to join the group. No registration needed, just show up before 5:00PM. We will cruise the bay and inlets to the west and enjoy the moonshine (not the liquid stuff)! Some of us will enjoy a late dinner at the new Scorpion Bay Marina Dillions afterwards, for those who wish to stick around.
