Downstream Events Calendar September 2023 The Ben Avery Shooting Facility (BASF) has announced new hours of operation, which became effective Aug. 29, for its rifle and pistol ranges, archery ranges, and Clay Target Center.

  • Monday: CLOSED
  • Tuesday: 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Thursday: 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Friday: 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Saturday: 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Sunday: 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Note: Archery ranges will close at sunset Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Downstream Events Calendar September 2023Poetry of Place: This workshop will focus on the significance of place in poetry. Place may be defined as a geographical location, an internal state, or perhaps a poetic meeting of the two. Using our beautiful surroundings of Petrified Forest National Park as inspiration, this workshop will lead students through a series of writing prompts to ultimately create an original draft of a poem. In addition, the class will briefly touch on line breaks and the use of sound. All experience levels welcome.

Sunday, Sept. 3, at Petrified Forest National Park 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

Nature Writing: Drawing inspiration from the remarkable beauty of Petrified Forest National Park, this workshop offers participants of all experience levels an opportunity to take in the extraordinary beauty around them, then turn their observations into powerful and vivid poems. Using celebrated examples of both traditional and contemporary poetry, we’ll discuss techniques such as metaphor, imagery, sound and allusion as well as introducing basic techniques for creating musicality within a poem. All experience levels welcome.

Downstream Events Calendar September 2023Arizona’s Wildcats (Virtual Speaker Series) Learn about our state’s stealthy hyper carnivores — 6:30 p.m. Sept. 6 (AZGFD). Description: Arizona is home to four different species of wildcats, including the third-largest field in the world. Feared, vilified, and worshiped, wildcats have had a varied relationship with humans from the beginning of time. From jaguars to bobcats, learn about these misunderstood predators, as well as their current ecology and biology.

Register now for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) workshops; The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) encourages all deer and elk hunters to attend an upcoming workshop about Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a fatal wildlife disease that affects the nervous system of cervid animals.All of the workshops will be conducted at department regional offices and include a short lecture (20 to 30 minutes), followed by an outdoor demonstration (20 to 30 minutes) on how to collect and submit the required lymph node tissue sampling for testing. There also will be opportunities to speak with wildlife health personnel, including technicians, as well as wildlife managers. Hunters can register by sending an email to chronicwastingdis@azgfd.gov.

  • 10 a.m. Sept. 9: 5000 W. Carefree Highway, Phoenix.
  • 7 p.m. Sept. 13: 555 N. Greasewood Road, Tucson.

  • 10 a.m. Sept. 23: 5325 N. Stockton Hill Road, Kingman.
