Page, AZ – One person is missing and presumed drowned after
a boat sank yesterday on Lake Powell in Glen Canyon National
Recreation Area.
The accident happened at approximately noon near buoy 13 in
the main channel.
The boat was attempting to pass another vessel when it
reportedly hit a wake at a high rate of speed, causing the hull
to split.
There were two passengers aboard the boat. One person was
rescued from the water by the Desert Odyssey, a tour boat
operated by Lake Powell Resorts and Marinas.
The other, Nancy Hoff, of Fruita, Colorado, is missing and
presumed drowned. Other boaters in the area who witnessed the
accident contacted
National Park Service rangers, who quickly arranged a search in
an effort to find Hoff.
Hoff is an employee of Marine Max of Grand Junction,
Colorado. Marine Max holds a commercial use authorization
allowing it to launch and retrieve
boats on Lake Powell for its customers. Employees of the company
were visiting the park for a corporate retreat.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. The National
Park Service’s underwater recovery team is assisting in the
search. Water depths at the accident site are approximately 350
feet.
